Thilawa SEZ Development Project Background

The Thilawa Special Economic Zone (SEZ), located 20 kilometres (kms) southeast of Yangon city comprises 2,400 hectares (ha), with 400 ha for the initial Phase 1 development and a further 2,000 ha reserved for Phase 2.

The Thilawa SEZ is a joint venture between the Myanmar and Japanese governments and companies from both countries. The developer of the Thilawa SEZ is Myanmar Japan Thilawa Development Ltd (MJTD), which was formed in October 2013. The MJTD is a special purpose company founded by MMS Thilawa Development Co. Ltd (MMST); Myanmar Thilawa SEZ Holdings Public Limited (MTSH) and the Thilawa SEZ Management Committee (TSMC), with the purpose of building, selling and operating industrial complexes in Thilawa, Myanmar. The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has equity participation in MJTD.
